There was a time where the idea of meal replacement substances were a mainstay of sci-fi culture.  The Jetsons had food pills, and 2001: A Space Odyssey featured a liquid “astronaut chow”. Whenever we thought about “food of the future” it always seemed to appear in pill or liquid form.

So far, the 21st century has not disappointed. Ok, so we don’t have “food pills” yet, but we do have soylent.  And we also have shakes and smoothies that can be used any time of day or night as a meal replacement or a snack.

Smoothies for breakfast are pretty common, but we’re not really living in the future unless we can put lunch and dinner in a glass too. Whether you’re working through lunch or grabbing dinner while carpooling the kids, we’ve put together a list of some of the best plant-based smoothie recipes we could find for your afternoon and evening meals. And, frankly, these hunger-crushing beverages sound a LOT better than pot roast in pill form.

Plant-Based Smoothies for Lunch

No matter how busy you are there’s no good reason to skip lunch when you can have it one-handed. One of these lunch smoothie recipes is bound to fit into your schedule.

PB&J Smoothie (Jamba Juice Copycat)

It’s hard to think of any lunchtime staple that’s more iconic than peanut butter and jelly. This PB&J smoothie from Detoxinista is a Jamba Juice “secret menu” copycat that may be even better than the original. This recipe mixes up peanut butter, almond milk, strawberries, raspberries, and bananas for a vegan lunch with a side of nostalgia.

Pumpkin Spice Green Smoothie

If you’ve ever contemplated whether to use your lunch break to get food or a pumpkin spice beverage, this pumpkin spice green smoothie from Bites of Wellness is the best of both worlds. Frozen spinach, nut butter, non-dairy milk, and pumpkin spice (of course) mixed with a little bit of vegan protein powder make this a filling midday meal that also tackles your pumpkin spice craving.

Fiesta Savory Smoothie

Next time you feel like taking a siesta during your lunch hour, try having a fiesta smoothie instead. The fiesta savory smoothie from Simple Green Smoothies is low on carbs but big on flavor. This recipe uses spinach, chickpeas, avocado and tomatoes for a high-protein lunch to get you through the end of the day.

Simple Blended Salad

What do you do when you feel like having a salad but don’t have time to sit and eat it? You blend! This blended salad from Helyn’s Plant-based Kitchen can include any veggies you like but is best with a base of lettuce, and avocado for creaminess. The combo oxidizes quickly, so drink this salad-like smoothie right away.

Power Greens Smoothie

It’s always a good time for a little kale. While it’s not exactly a home-blend, the Power Greens Smoothie from Splendid Spoon is a great choice for breakfast or lunch. Filled with kale and banana with the added benefit of spirolina, flax seeds and wheat grass this mix is great for launching your day or drinking your lunch.

Plant-Based Smoothies for Dinner

Let’s start with this, it’s probably not a great idea to have smoothies for all three meals a day on a regular basis. But if you had a big lunch and want a light dinner, or you need to grab dinner on the go and want a healthier option than a snack bar or fast-food drive-through, then the dinner smoothie is a great option.

Spicy Tomato Smoothie

If you like gazpacho, this spicy tomato smoothie from The Blender Girl is a terrific savory option. This mix of tomatoes, English cucumbers, red bell peppers, and avocado is kicked up with red pepper flakes to give it as much heat as you can handle.

Savory Summer Corn Green Smoothie

If you love corn and creamy corn-based soups then the savory summer corn green smoothie from Sparkle, Sweat, and Juice may be the perfect light supper. A blend of corn, swiss chard, green onions, celery, and orange pepper it’s “like drinking a summer garden in a glass”.

Drinkable Salad

Here’s another twist on a salad-in-a-glass from Kitchen Nostalgia. Mixing lettuce, cucumber, seeded jalapenos and greek yogurt (substitute non-dairy yogurt to keep it plant-based) makes a tangy, creamy salad-substitute that you can drink.

“French potato soup” Smoothie

Listed as one of “6 Tasty Onion Smoothie Recipes for the Immune System” by AFQ, this smoothie is like soup in a cup. With potato, onion, leek and vegetable broth involved there’s a little cooking before you blend, but it can be stored and served cold. The recipe calls for milk, but suggests soft tofu as a substitute for a plant-based version. If you love the combo of potatoes and leeks, this is definitely worth trying along with the other five onion-y smoothies on the list.

So there you go! Nine smoothies you can enjoy for lunch, dinner. With options like these you can drink a healthy meal even when your’re in a rush.
